Fitchburg and Leominster Mass Daily News.- Indie rock favorites Guster will team up with environmental action group, Reverb, to launch the first annual Campus Consciousness Tour this spring. By joining forces with Reverb, a non-profit organization founded by Guster guitarist-vocalist Adam Gardner and his wife Lauren Sullivan, Guster hopes to spread environmental awareness and inspire students to get involved with earth-friendly causes.
"We know that college kids comprise a huge part of our fanbase," says Gardner. "Campuses have traditionally led the way for positive change in this country, and Guster is in the unique position to help be a catalyst."
To that end, Reverb will erect an interactive "Consciousness Pavilion" at each stop on the tour, which kicks off on March 22nd in San Diego, CA. Booths and exhibits will educate concertgoers about renewable energy sources and local and global environmental non-profits, as well as offer eco-friendly products to sample. In addition, community service organizations, such as City Year and Rock For a Remedy, will respectively recruit students in each town to organize a community service project and conduct a food drive at each concert.
Also, the Student PIRGs will organize an interactive on-campus event such as the "Pimp My Clean Ride Car Show" designed to raise the profile of global warming and its solutions while sparking students to get involved in the Campus Climate Challenge. The Campus Climate Challenge is a coalition of 25 youth environmental groups working to get students at 500 universities across North America to reduce their campus' global warming pollution down to almost zero as quickly as possible.
To encourage attendance at the pavilion, Guster will raffle off an autographed guitar and a meet-and-greet with the band at each show. They will promote the pavilion, which is sponsored by Clif and Luna Bar, from the stage and encourage concertgoers to visit.
Clif and Luna Bar are part of CLIF BAR & Co., an environmentally and socially conscious company that produces all natural and organic food for active, conscious consumers. "Just like sport, the outdoors and living a healthy lifestyle, music is something the company is very passionate about. Clif and Luna Bar are partnering with the Campus Consciousness Tour because we relate to their interest in combining a live music experience with education about important social and environmental issues," says company representative Grady O'Shaughnessy. Clif and Luna Bar will be talking to fans about initiatives that are important to each: for LUNA, bringing awareness to the Breast Cancer Fund and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics; for Clif, the Stopglobalwarming.org Virtual March on Washington and offsetting your own impact on global warming through the purchase of Cool Tags.
Reverb will also "green" the tour itself by using biodiesel fuel and offsetting the concerts with wind power. The National Biodiesel Board is partnering with the Tour to fill the tour buses with biodiesel fuel. Biodiesel is a cleaner burning fuel made from renewable resources like soybean oil and other fats and vegetable oils. It works in any diesel engine. Native American renewable energy company, NativeEnergy, will donate renewable energy credits or "green tags" to offset 100 percent of the carbon dioxide emissions generated by the tour. With NativeEnergy, individuals and leading socially and environmentally responsible organizations can offset the global warming impact of their energy use by actually helping to drive construction of new tribal-owned and family farm-owned renewable energy projects that will reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and slow global warming. Tom Boucher, NativeEnergy's president and CEO, says, "This pairing of music and consciousness sets the stage for the music industry and fans worldwide to take responsibility for the global warming impact of their everyday energy use."
Gardner reiterates, "Above all, we want to leave a positive impact on each community and college that the tour reaches."
Guster's new album "Ganging Up On The Sun" will be released on June 13th.
